A free tool to explore molecular structures.

Jmol is a multiplatform interactive applet (it works on Windows, Mac and Linux) for web browsers. It's an open source tool that's highly suited to complement teaching materials through the web, and databases for chemical formulas. Jmol is a standalone program written in Java that's translated into many languages.

It consists of a desktop tool and a browser add-on that makes it possible to explore molecular structures (as long as they are hosted on a website).

In addition, Jmol can generate a website from a file compatible with the program to add details to the three-dimensional view of the structures. Jmol can create files in formats such as JPG, PNG, PPM, PDF and PovRay. It works with browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera.

Jmol requires Java 1.4 or higher.
